30 seconds with designer Sonata

Picked up by renowned and specialised magazines such as Vogue UK, WWD and Intima, Sonata Lingerie’s handmade designs has already seduced hundreds of women throughout the world since its launch in 2009. What are the secrets behind this ready-to-shine lingerie that attracts women to the world of intimate beauty? We asked the discrete and talented designer Sonata to give us a brief insight of her eponymous brand...

What is Sonata Lingerie s’ DNA?

Born and raised in Lithuania under the Soviet regime marked with conformism and austerity, I, as a girl, did not have access to fashion or art and still remember how ugly and raspy my first underwear were! Having moved to London as a grown up woman I wanted to explore to world of intimate fashion, to get back what I was deprived from as a little girl and allow other women to do the same. Therefore, my lingerie is about the reappropriation of the body, bringing luxury to the realm of women’s intimacy. To this end, all of my designs are made of the most delicate fabrics (such as silk chiffon, silk satin, linen, French lace,...) and ornaments (such as Swarovski crystals).

Where do you get your inspiration from?

The French “Belle Epoque” (1871-1914) was rich in culture, fashion and art and is therefore my greater source of inspiration. Besides that, and as funny as it might sound, I like to decorate my designs with details usually found on fashion accessories such as shoes or handbags.

How and what kind of designs are you creating?

I never make previous draws of my designs. The latter really come to life while I am making them, depending on my inspiration of the moment! As far as my designs are concerned, they range from everyday wear such as knickers, strings, thongs, bras or pyjamas to glamorous bodysuits, gowns, camisoles, playsuits and garters for special occasions such as romantic or wedding nights as well as swimsuits and bikinis.
